Saturday, September 2nd: Book Presentation Cobre and Screening of the Documentary Ave María
On Saturday, September 2nd, 2023, at 8:30 p.m., the Cuatrogatos Foundation and Artefactus Cultural Project will present the book Cobre and screen the documentary Ave María in Miami. Both works are by the Cuban writer and filmmaker Gustavo Pérez Fernández. This event for adult audiences will take place at Artefactus Black Box.
Cobre, a photographic essay published in Madrid by Ediciones Deslinde, tells the story of this significant locality in Cuban history and culture, as it was home to the oldest copper mines in the Americas (officially closed in 2001). In 1926, the sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, the Patroness of Cuba, was erected in this location.
The medium-length film Ave María, produced by AM Productions, documents the testimony of how the mine and the temple have influenced the lives of people who have lived in the town and its surroundings over time. This documentary participated in the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana (2009), where it received the Sara Gómez Award; the Guadalajara International Film Festival (Mexico) in 2010; the Toronto Hispano American Film Festival in Canada in 2010; Cinemaissí-Latin American Film Festival in Finland in 2010; and the London Latin American Film Festival in England.
Gustavo Pérez Fernández was born in Camagüey, Cuba, in 1962, and currently resides in Miami. He is a photographer, poet, and filmmaker. He is the author of books such as Por el Ojo del Tiempo, Friso de la Vida, and El Cuaderno de las Sombras. His poetic anthology Aunar lo Imprevisible was published by Ediciones Unión. Among his documentaries are Severo Secreto, La Octava Isla, and Todas Iban a Ser Reinas.
With this event, the Cuatrogatos Foundation and Artefactus Cultural Project join the celebrations taking place in Cuba, Miami, and other parts of the world in honor of the Patroness of Cuba, whose celebration date is September 8th. Admission to this event is free.
