Book presentation of "Severo Secreto. Una biografía coral de Severo Sarduy" (Rialta Ediciones) on Sunday, June 11, 2023
On Sunday, June 11th at 5:00 p.m., the Cuatrogatos Foundation and Artefactus Cultural Project will present the book "Severo Secreto. Una biogtrafía coral de Severo Sarduy" by Oneyda González, published by Rialta Ediciones. As part of the event, the documentary "Severo Sarduy," co-directed by Oneyda González and Gustavo Pérez Fernández, will also be screened. This event, which will feature the participation of both creators, pays tribute to writer Severo Sarduy (Camagüey, 1937 - Paris, 1993) on the thirtieth anniversary of his passing and is presented as part of the Queer Showcase exhibition scheduled in its Black Box by Artefactus.
The book "Severo Secreto" was born from the numerous interviews conducted for the eponymous documentary dedicated to the life and work of the author of "Maitreya," "Cobra," "Colibrí," and "Pájaros de la playa," among other works that made him a prominent figure of the neobaroque movement. The 64-minute film "reflects on the right to individual expression and defends freedom of speech, regardless of the subject's perspective." It is a proposal that "identifies with diversity, understanding ideology as the result of combinations between the individual and their environment, where education, religion, culture, gender, sexuality, race, and politics coexist."
To publish the book, Oneyda González added a series of new testimonies about Sarduy to the original interviews conducted for the documentary, which further enrich the approach to this author who, once exiled, never wanted to return to his home country.
"The book and documentary offer a touching portrait of the artist that emerges from the voices of his friends, classmates, and fellow literary group members, as well as from individuals as close to him as philosopher François Wahl, who publicly shares his archives for the first time, providing testimonies about Sarduy's working method and his private universe," explains the press release from the publisher.
Admission to this event, intended for adult audiences, is free.
