Books winners of the Fundación Cuatrogatos Award 2023
One of our organization's missions is the study and evaluation of Spanish-language publishing in children's and young adult literature. As a result of our ongoing work, we have chosen the 20 winning books of the Fundación Cuatrogatos Award 2023 for the tenth time.
The selection was made by a multidisciplinary group of readers who considered 1,228 publications from 226 publishers in 20 countries. This sample also included self-published books with an ISBN.
The graphic image that identifies the award was created this year by the renowned Spanish illustrator Concha Pasamar. For the Fundación Cuatrogatos, it is a source of special joy to have the collaboration of this artist, as three of her books have received our recognition in previous years.
Among the 20 winning works are picture books, poetry collections, short stories, and novels that are part of the catalogs of publishers from Argentina (Editorial Norma, Del Naranjo, Fondo de Cultura Económica de Argentina, Limonero, Loqueleo, Pequeño Editor), Spain (A buen paso, Akiara Books, Anaya Infantil y Juvenil, Cuento de Luz, Edebé, Edelvives, Ediciones Ekaré, Editorial Libre Albedrío, Kalandraka Editora, Nórdica Libros, Tres Tigres Tristes, Triqueta Verde), Peru (Mónimo), and Uruguay (Amanuense). Four of these imprints had not previously received the Fundación Cuatrogatos Award.
As usual, in addition to awarding the 20 prizes and highlighting 12 finalist works, we disseminate a list of 100 recommended titles for their literary and artistic values. A novelty this year is the inclusion of a special recognition for editorial rescues.
All this work is carried out with the aim of highlighting significant books, with remarkable literary and artistic quality, by Ibero-American creators. Our goal is to contribute to making these titles accessible to as many children and young readers as possible in homes, libraries, and schools.
